Going 3-D

The completion of my “60 Faces” project and the “Fractures” series that followed, brought with it some interesting new ideas. I was inspired to use the photographs in 3 dimensional pieces, to incorporate them in a variety of ways, into a body of work that confronted sociopolitical beliefs regarding weight, beauty, age and acceptance. Using various 3 dimensional media, I wanted to symbolically represent and confront my feelings in a light-hearted, yet thought provoking way.

In “Charmed” I created a necklace using a chain that I purposely aged with a rusting solution. The charms were made from discarded cans that I cut, shaped, embossed and aged with the same solution. I then cropped and printed tiny versions of my “60 Faces” and mounted them to the charms.
I used wire to attach the 60 charms to the rusty chain.

Bringing my vision for “Chained and Arranged” to reality was a little more of a challenge! It required rummaging through discarded piles next to abandoned houses, junkyards and the dump. After a little wheeling, dealing and negotiating, several bug bites and a torn shirt, I was  finally able to acquire the perfect, rusty, old refrigerator door, I had imagined. I mounted it to part of an old wooden pallet, and wrapped it with a rusted chain. Hanging from the chain, is an opened lock, purposely aged. In sharp contrast, it is covered with new refrigerator magnets, made from cut up pieces of my face paintings.  I invite the viewer to become involved in this work, by re-arranging the magnets in a way that they find pleasing. In doing so, they become part of the creative process.
You can see more of the 3 dimensional work on the “Recent” page of this website.
