Canned Fish

One of the many things I love about the area in which we live, is the number of wonderful volunteer organizations that provide the community with countless hours of time, energy, and imagination.
I try to participate as often as I can, especially when it involves an art project!
The Fish Elementary School Project is sponsored by Youth Arts, a non-profit volunteer organization
providing art enrichment in public schools. Youth Arts is involved in creating a public art installation
in the lobby of the new Camden Rockport Elementary School.  The fish will be suspended from the ceiling and displayed as a  piece of kinetic art, created entirely by the students. To help fund the
project, area artists are invited to take wooden fish (provided by the organization) and paint, design,
or decorate them, so that they can be auctioned or sold to support the project.
I was very pleased to be asked to participate. To decorate my fish, I chose to use discarded tin cans
that I cut into shapes, then embossed and nailed to the wood. (The Cuttlebug works great for embossing
metal as well as paper.) The variety of colors in the can’s interiors created an interesting palette for the
work. The last step was to “antique” the fish with black paint to accentuate the detail of the embossed design. The finished piece is approx. 22x10x3 including the wooden base.
All of the completed fish will be displayed throughout the Camden Rockport area prior to a fundraising
event that will be held in the fall.
